A different kind of reteam is in store for Ghosted, the Apple Original Films romantic action adventure film to be helmed by Dexter Fletcher. Ana de Armas will reteam with her Knives Out co-star Chris Evans in the film. Scarlett Johansson, Evans’ oft-collaborator in the Marvel movies, has amicably exited the picture in what sources describe as a scheduling conflict.
Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger are producing, along with Jules Daly. Evans will serve as producer and de Armas as an executive producer. The film’s writers, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (Deadpool, Zombieland), will also be producers. They developed the project based on an original idea of theirs and preemptively sold it to Skydance.
Apple acquired the high-profile project over the summer. It is described as a high concept romantic action adventure film. The change comes because the intent is to get the picture into production by February, and the timing didn’t work out for Johansson. Ellison led the charge to bring in de Armas, who’s about as hot an actress out there right now after Knives Out and No Time to Die, and Blonde. She most recently starred with Evans and Ryan Gosling in the Joe and Anthony Russo-directed The Gray Man for Netflix. She has also been in talks to play the lead in the John Wick spinoff Ballerina.
Skydance is coming off the Chris Pratt-starrer The Tomorrow War, the Michael B. Jordan-starrer Without Remorse, and has set Victoria Mahoney to direct Old Guard 2. Fletcher directed Rocketman and completed Bohemian Rhapsody.
Apple has several buzzworthy awards season titles including CODA, The Tragedy of Macbeth, Swan Song and Finch, with other big films coming in the Martin Scorsese-directed Killers of the Flower Moon, the Will Smith-Antoine Fuqua film Emancipation, and the Ridley Scott-directed Kitbag with Joaquin Phoenix as Napoleon Bonaparte and Jodie Comer as his wife Josephine.
De Armas is repped by CAA and Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks.
After their apparent exit from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Avengers co-stars Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson will reunite in an interesting way for an upcoming movie at Apple TV+. Called Ghosted, the movie is described as a “romantic action adventure” story that features Evans and Johansson starring in the lead roles. The movie comes from Apple Studios and Skydance with Dexter Fletcher (Rocketman) on board to direct.
Perhaps Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson will have some excellent on-screen chemistry in Ghosted, as they’ve been working together for years. Marvel fans will know that the two have both appeared in their respective roles as Captain America and Black Widow in Marvel’s popular Avengers movies. They also co-starred alongside one another in 2004’s The Perfect Score and 2007’s The Nanny Diaries.
This reunion is also coming at an interesting time as it seems that both actors are finished with the MCU at this time. Evans had his Steve Rogers character written out of the story in a way that would seem difficult for him to continue in Avengers: Endgame. The same could be said for Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff, albeit her end was more definitive. She returned to the role for this year’s Black Widow, although that was a prequel and there are no plans to continue on with the character at Marvel Studios.
Johansson’s lawsuit against Disney would also seemingly make her Marvel return all the more unlikely. In July, Scarlett Johansson filed a lawsuit against Disney over the way Black Widow was released both in theaters and on Disney+ with Premier Access. Because her salary is tied to the box office performance of the movie, the actress alleges that the dual release was a breach of contract. Disney has responded by saying the lawsuit shows a “callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.”
While it would appear that Johansson won’t be doing any Disney movies in the near future, she’s already back to work filming her next movie. The former Avengers star was recently cast in an untitled Wes Anderson movie that’s now shooting in Spain. Along with Johansson, the cast features an impressive ensemble thas also includes Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, Margot Robbie, Adrien Brody, Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, and Jeffrey Wright.

Captain America is too busy saving the world to be watching Disney+. During a recent stop at a virtual ACE Comic Con, Chris Evans made the substantial reveal he has yet to see a single episode of WandaVision. Appearing in a Zoom call alongside his brother Scott, Evans mentioned he’s simply hasn’t had a chance to sit down and binge through the Jac Schaeffer and Matt Shakman-led series.
“Marvel’s really moving into the streaming world pretty seamlessly and pretty dominantly,” the Captain America star said. “I’ve yet to see any WandaVision episodes, but every single day it’s trending, you know what I mean? People are loving it and Kevin Feige is king.”
Even though Evans himself was supposed to hang the shield up after his character’s arc wrapped up in Avengers: Endgame, the actor has been in the news again after reportedly inking a deal to come back as Steve Rogers. Evans has since denied any claims of a potential return.
A potential Captain America return gained so much steam on social media, Feige himself opted to shut the rumors down. “I rarely answer no to anything anymore because things are always surprising me with what happens, but that rumor, I think, was dispelled rather quickly by the man himself,” the producer said to Entertainment Weekly earlier this year.
In the present MCU timeline, there’s technically a new Captain America. Though Wyatt Russell is playing John Walker — a character often known as US Agent in the source material — he’s being called Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
“What I thought was interesting about John is that Steve was a soldier from a different era. They’re both soldiers from different eras, and the era of John is very different than the era of Steve,” Russell told EW about his controversial new character. “The type of military men who are going to Iraq and Afghanistan was different because the time was different, and the grey area now, you see everything. Everything’s filmed. There’s a much different way of fighting now. You go in guns blazing first and ask questions later.”
WandaVision is now streaming in its entirety on Disney+.

Despite bringing what can only be described as a fitting end to his career at the conclusion of Avengers: Endgame, it would seem that Marvel isn’t quite done with Chris Evans’ Captain America just yet. That’s what a new report published by Giant Freakin Robot earlier today claims, at least, citing inside sources – the same ones that have accurately leaked miscellaneous information pertaining to the MCU previously – as having informed them of the studio’s unannounced plans for Captain America 4.
So, you’re probably wondering, then, just how a new story featuring Steve Rogers would play out in a post-Endgame world? After all, the First Avenger isn’t exactly in peak physical condition any longer thanks to his one-way trip to the past and considering that he explicitly passed the Cap mantle to Falcon before officially entering retirement, we’re not so sure what, if any, place he’d have in the realms of fighting crime in the present day.
Coincidentally, GFR’s source notes that Sam Wilson (AKA Falcon) will actually be the central focus of the fourth Captain America movie, with Steve Rogers – portrayed once again by Evans – presumably being a supporting player or mentor figure to him as well as the Winter Soldier.
This, of course, is far, far from being confirmed in any capacity, and were Marvel to truly pursue an indirect sequel to Civil War, there are multiple narrative angles from which to approach it. What with time travel being an established trope within the movies and the upcoming Spider-Man 3 proving that no aversions to exploring the multiverse on the big screen exist, there’s every opportunity for an alternate reality Rogers to appear or, conversely, a story that takes place between two timelines (i.e. the character’s life back in 1940s America as well as modern times).
What ultimately transpires, we’ll just have to wait and see, but suffice it to say, we’ll be keeping close tabs on this as it develops. In the meantime, let us know what themes you’d like to see explored in Captain America 4 down below!
